India has been a major seat of learning for thousands of years, dating back to ancient seats of learning like Nalanda. There are broadly four stages of school education in India, namely primary, upper primary, secondary and high school. Overall, schooling lasts 12 years, following the "10+2 pattern". Secondary education is the stage of education following primary school. Secondary education is generally the final stage of compulsory education. Usually, students from ages 14 to 18 study in this section. These schools may be affiliated to boards like PSEB or various other boards like CBSE, ICSE. The next stage of education is usually college or university.
The Government of Punjab has recently announced its new Education Policy. To increase the literacy rate further, 'Sarav Sikhshya Abhiyan' will be extended to cover all children of the State by the end of 2003. The government will provide Rs 1,100 crore under the Sarav Shikhshya Abhiyan in the next 10 years. To increase attendance in schools, mid-day meals have been made compulsory in many schools.
