There are broadly four stages of school education in India, namely primary, upper primary, secondary and high school. Overall, schooling lasts 12 years, following the "10+2 pattern". Secondary education is the stage of education following primary school. Secondary education is generally the final stage of compulsory education. Usually, students from ages 14 to 18 study in this section. These schools may be affiliated to boards like PSEB or various other boards like CBSE, ICSE. The next stage of education is usually college or university.
The Government of Punjab has recently announced its new Education Policy. To increase the literacy rate further, 'Sarav Sikhshya Abhiyan' will be extended to cover all children of the State by the end of 2003. The government will provide Rs 1,100 crore under the Sarav Shikhshya Abhiyan in the next 10 years. To increase attendance in schools, mid-day meals have been made compulsory in many schools. It is mostly provided by the District Institute of Education & training (DIET) Shekhupura and in service Training Center Kapurthala. Adarsh Schools
Punjab School Education Board is managing nine Adarsh Schools as a pilot project for providing quality education to the students belonging to the rural areas of the State. The administrative, academic and financial control of these schools is with the Board. All these schools have spacious buildings with other modern facilities including the latest equipment pertaining to computer education and information technology. All the schools enroll students from nursery to class XII. In Kapurthala 4 schools are selected under this scheme that is one per block.

NABARD scheme for government schools
The Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Parkash Singh Badal has directed the School Education Department to implement Rs.132 crore NABARD assisted scheme for the upgradation of infrastructure in the Government Senior Secondary Schools with Science stream in true spirit. 12 schools (3 per block) are selected under this scheme. UK NRI Raj Loomba, donated Rs. 50 lakh (Rs 5 mn) to G.S.S.School Dhilwan Distt. Kapurthala (Punjab)
London NRI Raj Loomba announced a grant of Rs.5 million for the renovation of his native village school Dhilwan, district Kapurthala, Punjab. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal promised to give a matching grant of another Rs.5 million. Raj Loomba was born, one of seven children, at Dhilwan, Punjab in 1943. His parents, Shri Jagiri Lal Loomba and Shrimati Pushpa Wati Loomba, had a successful business which was conducted under the motto: "Ik bol- Ik tol" ('One price, no haggling and true weighing') having won high respect for adhering to such principles.

Sports
Sports activities at school are extremely important and students who participate in them can develop a more balanced personality. District Kapurthala is State level champion of the girls basket ball for the year of 2007-08. State level games like Kabbadi Hand Ball and basket ball held in this district in 2007-08. More over national level games were also held in this district for under 14, under 17 and under 19 in hand ball (Boys and Girls).
District sports wing is functioning under the Punjab Govt. sports department and Education department at Khera Dona, Hussainpur, Tibba and Sultanpur etc. Sports hostel is also under the consideration at the G. G. Sen. Sec. School Kapurthala (Ghanta Ghar). Recently Punjab Government has issued Rs. 1,4206241-00 for the sports complex in various villages and for the upgradation of sports in the district. More funds are going to be sanctioned for Khiranwali, Talwandi Chodhrian and few others schools also. NCC:
NCC is optional for all students in the schools from class 6th Onwards. The school has the Junior Division NCC Wings leading up to Certificate B competence. Drill, Annual Training Camps and Rifle firing are taught as a part of NCC training. The cadets also get a chance to participate in Para-sailing , mountaineering , rock climbing , trekking and adventure camps.
Co-Curricular Activities: -
The school caters for harmonious all round development and growth of the students personality. The students are encouraged to take part in science fares, debates, declamations, quiz competitions, dramatics, lectures etc. The schools provide ample opportunities and scope for the growth of creative faculties by offering music, art, painting, dance and science as hobbies. The schools have a well equipped Brass Bands .PTI Teachers practise the students to perform drill shows at school and various functions celebrated at district level.

EDUSAT is the Indian satellite built exclusively for serving the educational sector. It is mainly intended to meet the demand for an interactive satellite based distance education system for the country. It strongly reflects India´s commitment to use space technology for national development, especially for the development of the population in remote and rural locations. EduSat is providing competition coaching as well as normal education from class 9th to 12th in many subjects. Total Nine schools are provided yet with this facility soon it will be extended to others schools:

Stipend: - Total Rs.415400-00 stipend has been disbursed to all Schedules cast and as well as to meritorious schedule cast students in 216 schools at different rates as given below:-
Free Books: Free books are provided to all the Schedule casts students as well as to girl´s students irrespective to their cast from class 6th to 8th.
Guidance and counseling: - Guidance and carrier counseling is a part of the school activity. In this activity students are introduced with the latest changes and future demands of the employees. These guidance corners work with the guidelines of the head of the counselor at District education office. Teachers from the schools are also trained and equipped with the latest knowledge during the year in the seminars to do the duty of counselor. Latest literature is also provided to them.
Computer literacy under ICT project:- PICTES (Punjab Information and communication, Education Society) launched ICT Project to provide Computer Education in Government Schools in different phases as per below.
Phase 1st and 2nd is complete while 3rd is in process. Computer Labs are ready but hardware is not supplied. In 3rd Phase one post of Computer Faculty is sanctioned in schools having 110 or more than 110 students.
